he Historic Group of Flag Wavers of the City of Volterra was founded in 1978 by the local branch of the AVIS organization (which promotes blood donation), given the historical documentation which showed the presence of flag wavers in Volterra during the Middle Ages. The aim of this group is to recreate the traditions, symbols and historical and cultural roots of the city. Since the Group was founded it has been invited to perform in innumerable shows in Italy and abroad, acclaimed throughout the world for the elegance of their costumes and the great skill of their flag wavers and musicians. In 1980 the Group became part of the FIS (Italian Federation of Flag Wavers). The group currently consists of about 70 members, from flag wavers to musicians, standard bearers, pages, dames and soldiers, all of whom wear late 14th century costumes, with designs inspired by documents found in the Historic Archive of the City of Volterra.
The Group has been awarded praise and recognition in the most important national and international tournaments: in particular, the group has been repeatedly named Italian Champion in the categories of Traditional Single and Musicians. In its exhibitions, the Group does classical reenactments of traditional games, with flags, choreography and games inspired by historical events in Medieval and Renaissance Volterra.
At festivals, popular shows and parades and historic reinactments, whether of an athletic, cultural or religious nature, the Volterran flag wavers can be considered ambassadors of peace wherever they travel in the world, always stimulating strong emotions. Depending on the space available, the Group delights the audience with their choreography and “single” games in which one flag waver juggles and spins up to seven flags at a time, their “couple” performance in which two flag wavers, like gladiators in a duel, exchange their flags with perfect synchronization, or even their “team” performance in which seemingly flaming drapes dance to the sound of the drums and straight trumpets, all of a sudden leaping into the sky to explode in a burst of color. The Volterran flags have been raised in Italy, S.Marino, Vatican City, Swiss, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Algeria, Cyprus, Lebanon, Morocco, India, Japan and China. Among the other activities that The Historic Group of Flag Wavers of the City of Volterra is involved with at its offices in Via Firenzuola in Volterra are: the School of Flag Waving and Music; the organization of the Astiludio competition and the Ode to Spring festival; the atelier of medieval costumes, where the faithfully-reproduced medieval clothes are packaged and rented; and the organization of the epic medieval festival VOLTERRA AD 1398, which involves the entire city each year on the last two Sundays
